Portable Fallout Tactics

What is this game?

Unlike the previous two Fallout games, Fallout Tactics emphasizes tactical combat and strategy. Players are not able to respond to non-player characters, but they can still trade and gamble. Instead of towns, Fallout Tactics centers around Brotherhood bunkers and missions. The bunkers serve as a central point for the Brotherhood, and players can obtain the services of quartermasters, mechanics, personnel yeomen, and medics. Characters from completed missions occasionally visit the bunkers.

Features:

  • Completely portable and leaves no registry entries

  • No CD Check

Download Portable Launcher Only
(If you already have the game installed on your computer, simply download this file. Execute the launcher from a directory (along with the .reg file) of your choice. It will ask for a folder containing your previously installed game. Edit the .reg file to insert your previous serial or adjust any game settings manually, if you wish.)

Installing??
This game does not need to be installed!
Just extract the files wherever you want, and double click on the "Portable Fallout Tactics.exe" to play the game!

Anonymous said...

Same here I don't know how to open the folder. It opens with an 'Unknown application'

Milo said...

It's a compressed archive.

http://www.7-zip.org/

Open with 7z or winrar.

"Hmm

Okay, so I got the game to show the main menue. It says install fallout tactics, view readme, etc. I click on install fallout tactics and a window pops out saying to go to control panel to install and configure system. What do I do?

Milo said...

Well, I have to ask how you've managed to get that menu!

To get this game running properly, you should have done the following things:

1) Downloaded the Portable Fallout Tactics game (for example from bittorrent).

2) Extracted the game to some location.

3) Downloaded the Potable Fallout Tactics patch/launcher from this site.

4) Extracted the patch/launcher over the game files; overwriting the originals.

5) Double-click the Portable Fallout Tactics.exe file.

If you've done all these things, and you've still got that menu, there's something very wrong! Post again to tell me some more information - anything you could think o that could be important.

Okay I've downloaded both game and the patch/launcher, I'm using 7z to extract the files. How do I overwrite the original files with the launcher/patch?

Milo said...

Extract the game into a folder.
Then extract the patch into the same folder.

Anonymous said...

Ya I already tried that, dude can you post a more detailed procedure because you might be leaving out some important stuff.

Milo said...

I'd be more than happy to help you fix this! Can you tell me what you've done so far?

Also, since all posts are anonymous, I can't which are yours!

I posted that comment just there, my name's Joe. Okay,

-I've downloaded the game, it came in two unknown files, one 1gb, the other 500mb
-then I downloaded the patch and the launcher
-I got the 7z converter and converted everything into a normal folder
-the first game file works after converting, the second 500mb file doesn't work

Milo said...

Wow! Joe, I have to confess that I may have mislead you! There is no patch for Fallout Tactics. It should work with out any additional downloads.

When you use 7z and open the .7z.001 file, it automatically opens the .7z.002 file, so there is no need to do anything other than extract the first file somewhere, and play!

Please let me know how that goes.
I'm not giving up unless you do!

Is there any chance of incorporating the 1.27 patch in this, because as it is the game suffers from a number of crippling bugs, such as the one where you cannot bring your APC to bunker delta without it getting completely stuck.

Anonymous said...

In addition to the 1.27 patch which remedies various unplayable bugs, there is also a patch for missing/corrupt sprites on the third CD. Please look into this so that the portable version can be updated to the patched version.

I have done everything that everyone has posted and asked and I still can't get it to work. I click on the BOS.exe to play and it pops up saying I need the CD. I click on the Portable Fallout Tactics.exe and the launcher pops up saying I need to install and that doesn't work either. Some help please!?

The game really work out. Really cool. I already been playin Fallout 1 and 2 so I Really2 need to play fallout tactic before I play Fallout 3. Thx bro.. ^_^
PS: U only need to do as Milo said but after you extract launcher, u should extract the patch too.

Milo,

I really want this to work, but I as the other have stated, clicking on "Portable Fallout Tactics.exe" (both the one in the .7z file and the one in the patch on your site here) gets the install menu. If I click on BOS.exe, the game starts up, but asks for the game disk.

Does this need to be installed in a certain location? All the paths in "Portable Fallout Tactics.reg" are hard coded to "C:\\Program Files\\14 Degrees East\\Fallout Tactics".

Any other suggestions?

I think this: "Fallout (3)"(it's the post count from "Fallout" category) is a sign, you should create Fallout 3 portable :D That would be awesome! Nice work by the way.

@bespoke: I haven't tested this game but try changing the path in the .reg file, but the game might do it by itself.

Cozakaxo said...

when I click on portable fallout tactics, it comes up with the instaler menu, not the game itself, can you help me?

Anonymous said...

This is awesome. Would you mind porting Fallout 3?

Is there anyway you could make your launchers not need admin rights? I want to play these games at work on a user account, hence the need for direct play or portable games. Thanks for your efforts thus far!

Milo said...

The games themselves require administrator rights to modify the admin's registry.

I've installed both the original portable files and the patches and tried the launcher. I've also tried changing the path in the (Portable Fallout Tactics.reg) file from (C:\\Program Files\\14 Degrees East\\Fallout Tactics) to (C:\\Portable Fallout Tactics\\App\\Fallout Tactics). However, every time I open 'Portable Fallout Tactics.exe' the screen will go black and then close giving me the error message 'C:\dev\phoenix\display\directx7\dd7_display.cpp(715):**fatal error**. Could not create primary and back surfaces' and then 'Runtime Error! Program: C:\Portable Fallout Tactics\App\Fallout Tactics\BOS.exe abnormal program termination'

Anonymous said...

Thanks! This doesn't work, IT'S NOT PORTABLE, and your Dropbox to the V2 patch is k.o.

But I guess you didn't do it on purpose.

Tandy said...

Hi, was there ever a answer to the issue where when you clicked "Fallout Tactics Launcher" it would ask you to install???

Tandy said...

My bad. The Critical update fixed the issue...

Thanks for the GREAT port.

Im not sure if you even look at this site but same issues.

I download the orig 2 files.. then the 3rd zip file from this site.

first extract the 2 7rar files then the new rar file from here.

then the fallout launcher pops up and options are to install register etc.. What am i doing wrong?

Anonymous said...

If you start it up and you see:
"C:\dev\phoenix\display\directx7\dd7_display.c99(715):**fatal error **: Could not create primary and back surfaces"
here's what you need to do.

1: Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout Tactics folder and create a Shortcut for BOS.exe
2: Move the shortcut to another folder or desktop
3: Right click the Shortcut and go to Properties
4: Under the Shortcut tab you should see Target and in the box the location of the BOS.exe in quotes.
5: At the end of the quotes put a space then -g
Example: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout Tactics\BOS.exe" -g
6: Run the game from the Shortcut
