Portable Baldur's Gate - The Original Saga

What is this game?

Baldur's Gate is a computer role-playing game in a high fantasy setting, developed by BioWare and released in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. It is one of the premier single-player titles in the history of the computer role-playing genre.

The story follows the player character as he or she grows up following the cataclysmic Time of Troubles, and it puts an emphasis on character development through dialogue and battle. The game rewards the player character according to his or her moral choices, in the spirit of the game's opening quotation, credited to Friedrich Nietzsche:

“He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster... when you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you..."
—Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil

do you know if it'll work with tutu?

That's funny you should mention TuTu...

Cross your fingers for a surprise this week!

great.
Would be better if you include the mods which fixes most of the unfixed bugs even with the latest patch.
While you're at it why not do all the Infinity Engines.

Firstly thanks for all the releases

was looking fwd to reliving Baldur's gate but everytime i try and run the portable launcher i get the following error msg

an assertion failed in d:\BGSourceUpdate_TOTSC\dev\chitin\ChDimm.cpp at line number 609 Programmer says: Unable to Open BIF:data\SFXSound.bif

any suggestions?

Milo said...

I don't know what to tell you; do you have admin privileges?

Anonymous said...

I'm having the same problem, but a little digging shows that it's probably not an issue with this portable version, but with the game itself. Anyone know of a general fix for this?

Anonymous said...

Love this game!

But sadly getting the same assertion line error too.

Anyone got any ideas?

Anonymous said...

Hey im new to USBGaming :D! great job guys, getting to love this community.

I had the same error...
then i changed all the "C:\\Program files..." on the registry entry then changed the baldur.ini "C:\Program..." to the folder i got the game at

got past the first error then i got a BGMain2.exe error :[

Anonymous said...

Further info...
Windows XP sp2

Replaced the BGMain2.exe for a "fixed" one... and got same error

Tried patching it and it wouldnt even start

Milo said...

As one poster said, I'm seeing a lot about BG crashing by itself, and not from anything I've done! =)

has anyone gotten the release on pirate bay to work right im getting an assertion error 595 programmer says no tlk file

Milo said...

A lot of people seem to be getting those assertion errors. I think they've got something to do with the program expecting the game to be on a particular drive letter (like C:/). There may be an unofficial patch to fix this. If someone can find that fix before I post something, please leave a comment!

dda said...

I'm getting the error as well

an assertion failed in d:\BGSourceUpdate_TOTSC\dev\chitin\ChDimm.cpp at line number 609 Programmer says: Unable to Open BIF:data\SFXSound.bif

I'm running WinXP SP2
No luck running from both C: and D:

Where are you running it from?

Anonymous said...

I got past this error by changing all instances in the baldur ini and reg entries to where the game is actually located but I'm still getting that assertion 595 no tlk file error. the only thing I am unsure of how to edit is where the game looks for the cds I think this might be the problem. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Milo said...

Wow, I don't think *anyone* has gotten this game to run!

The game shouldn't need any CDs, it was a full install and I applied the no-cd patch.

dda said...

Changing the HD0 line to the location where its located gets the intro movies to work (black isle, something, bioware, then the little movie) but then it (bgmain2.exe)fails with an exception (0xc0000005). memory access?

Anonymous said...

Those of us who are getting an assertion error, I want to say that it's a problem with the no cd crack. The error seems to consistently point to drive D:\, which for most of us will be the disk drive.

Anonymous said...

Nope, not a crack issue; I just tried a new crack myself, and got the same result.

Anonymous said...

Got this to work!! All you have to do is copy it all to the folder "C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Baldur's Gate\" so in that folder you should have all the files and folders eg. BGMain2.exe,App,AppInfo,Data,Music,Movies
and the Portable Balders Gate - The Original Sage.exe
Make sure you include the apostrophe.

Anonymous said...

If You got this to work by moving it all to that folder how can I edit the necessary files to make this truly "portable" because the reg and ini files should be able to be edited to make this work anywhere, to be "portable"

Milo said...

I've got a fix!

Anonymous said...

I fixed the game but every time I run it it creates two files in the root of the drive that it is on is there any way to stop this it is not a big deal just a little annoying thanks again for all the work you put into all these releases

Milo said...

What files?

Anonymous said...

They are Baldurs Gate - The Original Saga Portable.ico and Baldurs Gate - The Original Saga Portable.nsi they are created every time I run it. I just thought it was really weird

Milo said...

OK
I took a look at this, and it was indeed strange...
To fix this, open the Baldurs Gate - The Original Saga Portable.ini file and find the line that says ;ExtractSources=TRUE. Remove the semicolon, and change true to false (capitalization doesn't matter).
You can safely delete those two files.

Anonymous said...

That is really funny I'm surprised by that answer because I was alot closer to fixing that issue myself than I thought. I was only a semi colon away from fixing it. Well hopefully I wont have any wierdness left to post here. Thank you for posting all of these games and for all of your help in fixing them.

Will the level caps or darkside of the sword coast mods work?

Milo said...

Try it :-)

So long as they don't use extra registry entries, then you should be fine. If all else fails, you can just get another clean copy ;-)

Anonymous said...

The level caps should be fine because they consist of only override files I think but the darkside of the sword coast I'm not too sure about because typically that can only be found in an .exe installer format but I might be able to extract the files to install it without using the installer. Suggestions? Also Was wondering about possible ups of Icewind Dale 1 & 2. I had almost as much fun with those as with Baldurs Gate.
Thanks again

Milo said...

Well, you could try winrar or 7z to unpack the .exe, but that's only if they used a similar tool to make the installer.

However, a good program to try is Universal Extractor at this address:

http://www.legroom.net/

Try it and let me know how it goes!

my game crashed at the Friendly Arm every time I try to enter the temple. Damnation! and I was just getting into it too. help!

Anonymous said...

ok the issue might have been adressed, but i think i got it to work "portable"-ly :)

Actually I had the patch installed like Milo said. (files overwritten, access paths corrected as there weher somtin like "D:" in them ... )

Then, it would give me the "assertion error", so i launched the app through the original exe found in the data folder called bgmain.exe ...
And Voilà ! Dont know why the launcher gave me trouble despite the patch.
Anyways, It worked.
Hope this helps, im gonna try this out for BG2 as well, good luck.

does any body know if this thing works on a mobile phone with like symbian os ? :O

Anonymous said...

I've tried running it but I only get to watch all the into movies and then it quits to Windows without any prompt. :/

" I've tried running it but I only get to watch all the into movies and then it quits to Windows without any prompt. :/ "

I have the same problem. I've never ran a portable version of any game before, so right now, I'm at a loss of what to do...

Anonymous said...

Ditto what Silver and anon said.

I'm running BGtOS Portable (version 3) off an external HDD. It plays the intro movies then quits to desktop, saying 'Tales of the Sword Coast has encountered a problem and needs to close' etc. Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Anonymous said...

Sorry for the double post, but the earlier error had to do with having too long a path name, like mentioned in the file description (might want to highlight that, sorry for missing it).

The file from piratebay has, by default, too long a folder name. I renamed it from 'baldur's gate original saga v3 portable' or something to just 'baldur's gate', and that worked. Hope that helps.

Anonymous said...

Hi all.

New to the concept of portable gaming and not sure how to start (post the download).

Is other software required to open the file?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Anonymous said...

I've got the same problem:
application starts, there are some movies to be seen and after that the game crashes, with windows saying "an error occured and Baldurs Gate.... had to be shut down"
I've got the newest version, its patched and I've tried every .exe file but nothing works.
How can I get this working?

Anonymous said...

Baldur's gate starts for me but after the video with sarevok it turns off and a failmessage comes up. . . My hotmail is flintnisse_91@hotmail.com please help me.

Hey Milo

Getting the following error on start

Title: Assertion

An Assertion failed in d:\BGSourceUpdate_TOTSC\dev\chitin\chDimm.cpp at line number 609
Programer says : Unable to Open BIF:data\SFXsound.bif

Also when I move the launcher around it tells me it cant find BGmain2.exe when it's clearly there in the same directory as the launcher.

Any idea how to fix this?

Anonymous said...

Mine also just runs the intro movies then quits to desktop without any error message.

Anonymous said...

Crashes to desktop right after showing Nietsche quote. I'm guessing graphic modes change and Windows XP SP3 doesn't like it?

Anonymous said...

^

This, the Baldur.exe where all the files are doesn't even start the game, it says I need disc 6.

When I try the one that says "BGtOS Portable" one it gets me through the into movies but crashes after the last one like the poster above. The BG2 torrent doesn't work either. Downloaded the patch and everything, it just doesn't want to start. Gives me a Bif:data/motsc error everyone else was getting.

I overwritted everything else like instructed. Is it because I'm running vista? I open up the programs as admin and under Windows Service Pack 2.

If you have a fix please send me an email cflobucket@aol.com. Much appreciated.

Any updates on why it crashes after the Nietzsche quote with Windows XP SP3?

Anonymous said...

Place the folder "Baldur's Gate - the Original Saga Portable v3 [USBGaming.org]" in your C: and it should fix the opening movie error

Hana said...

This works amazingly! It has given me a new excuse to run through BG2 again--perfect compatibility. :)

I would love to see work of this caliber for Planescape: Torment.

Well done, and thank you!

Anonymous said...

I moved it all to C: and changed the folder name to simply "Baldur's Gate", I've also done the other things, but I still get "An error has occurred" error message after Nietzsche.

Read Here How To Play Windowed Mode!!! said...

To play Baldurs Gate Tales of Swordcoast portable windowed mode is easy too:

in the directory where the game is located, go to:

App\BGtOS

there will be a .ini named "baldur.ini", open it.

In the last line, type these words:

[Display Options]
FullScreen=0
AllowWindowedMode=1

Now you can play Baldurs Gate windowed mode (Im almost certain this work with Baldurs Gate II too!!). You just have to type:

alt + enter

when you open the game, and voila! you can type alt + enter again to return to fullscreen..

Arrivederci!

This is awesome, Milo, thank you!
What I'm really loving it about this version is that it works PERFECTLY on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix) using the latest WineHQ. Too bad both Fallouts crash :( Another great thing about it is full movies, sounds and the very last patch version, just perfect! Looking forward to see other great games here :) Thanks again!
