Unreal Portable

What is this game?

Unreal is a first-person shooter computer game developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes and published by GT Interactive (now owned by Atari) in May 1998. It was powered by an original gameplay and computer engine that now bears the game's name, one that had been in development for over three years in founder Tim Sweeney's garage before the game was released.

The player takes on the part of Prisoner 849, an otherwise anonymous persona aboard the prison spacecraft Vortex Rikers. The ship crash-lands on the lip of a canyon on the planet Na Pali, home of the Nali, a primitive tribal race of four-armed humanoids. The Nali and their planet have been subjugated by the Skaarj, a race of brutish yet technologically advanced reptilian humanoids. Skaarj troops board the downed Vortex Rikers and kill the remaining survivors, save for Prisoner 849, who manages to arm himself/herself and escape from the ship.

The planet Na Pali is rich in "Tarydium", an exotic crystal that possesses a high energy yield, whose utility is the reason for which the Skaarj have invaded. The ship has crashed near one of the many Tarydium mines and processing facilities that the Skaarj have built. Prisoner 849 travels through the mines, meeting Nali slaves and eventually entering the ruins of Nali villages and cities, where the extent of the Nali's suffering and exploitation are made clear.

Excellent release! I was hoping for the Unreal series to come soon :-D I'll give it a test and post any bugs I find.

Okay, two major things so far. For one, UnrealEd doesn't work. Not sure if this was intended or not, just thought you should know :) I'm running Vista 32-bit. I run it and I get the error "This application has failed to start because MSVBVM50.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." Second, and more importantly, no matter how I change the graphics settings the game skips around. It's sort of hard to explain, I've never seen it before. It's not that it's low fps, that's just fine. It's almost like the game speeds up for an instant and skips frames multiple times a second. It makes it more or less unplayable. I'll test it on my desktop next. Definitely better suited for gaming than my laptop :P

Alrighty, must've just been an issue with my laptop's graphics drivers. I installed it on my desktop: core 2 duo, 4gb ram, 8800gtx graphics card, etc... and it works great. I've only found what might be one small glitch so far. Wherever there are flickering lights (in cells and pretty much EVERYWHERE at the beginning of the game) the flickering looks really messed up. Might've been like that in the original, can't remember that far back heh. If you need I'll make a short clip of it and email it. I'm a lot easier to catch via email. I'm willin' to test any games ya throw at me :-D

this is such an amazing concept. I'm really excited to play. unfortunately, when i follow the instructions on the title screen and "press ESC to begin" the program shuts itself down. any ways to get around that?

Nice game and all, but, same issue as Chris, the game kind of lags, but not literally lag, it just sticks every now and then.

From Brazil: Thanks a lot, no problem with my laptop to play with friends.

Fast enough to get installed on a Sunday afternoon...

I'm curious about the whole process of making a game portable. I have other games I would love to make portable as well. How do I go about doing that? Could you create some nice tutorials on that subject?
