Fallout 1.3.3 + NPC mod 3.3

What is this game?

Fallout is a computer role-playing game produced by Tim Cain, developed by Black Isle Studios (though before the studio was named "Black Isle") and published by Interplay in 1997. The game has a post-apocalyptic setting in the late 22nd century, though its story and artwork are heavily influenced by the post-World War II nuclear paranoia of the 1950s.

The game is sometimes considered to be an unofficial sequel to Wasteland, but it could not use that title as Electronic Arts held the rights to it, and, except for minor references, the games are set in separate universes. It was also intended to use Steve Jackson Games's GURPS system, but that deal fell through , forcing Black Isle to change the already implemented GURPS system to the internally developed SPECIAL system.

Critically acclaimed, the game inspired a number of sequels and spin-off games, known collectively as the Fallout series.

Didnt know where else to put it so I figured I'd leave it as a comment.
Just wanted to suggest Baldurs Gate to your hitlist.

Baldurs Gate would be one hell-of-a-big portable game

thanks!

how about some x-com: ufo defense up in here?

Baldurs Gate would be smaller than Fallout... I had it installed on a 500 meg hard drive back in the day....

I'm adding another suggestion the the hitlist: Population - The Beginning. I already have it on my USB working perfectly, smaller than Fallout, and it took me about two seconds to fix it from the original.

Also, wicked props for this concept. I've got Fallout on my key right now.

This is great, thank you very much,
I haven't played Fallout before,
so this is perfect chance for me to try it.
(and I already like it).

The thing is, fallout uses around 110 MB of RAM,
everything else takes up about 200 MB,
and task manager is reporting RAM memory
usage of over 800 MB!

So I'm wondering is this normal with
your portable aps?

If so, how much does it use up
when playing some more memory-consuming
games, like Dungeon Siege?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and interest!

Baulder's Gate is very likely in the near-ish future.

slavko, I'll look into this.

This is so awesome. Thanks!

It works at home but not at school, though. Here's the dialog box that pops up when I try to run the game:

---------------------------
Fallout Portable - 1.0.0.0
---------------------------
You are not allowed to write to the registry!!
Write access is necessary for this application!
Program will be terminated.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Why would it need to write to the registry if it's portable? Wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose? At home I've got an administrator account and at school, I don't. Help? By the way, running Falloutw.exe works.

Milo said...

Portable applications generally do 1 of 2 things:
1) They don't write any registry entries.
2) They write registry entries, which are copied to a file, and deleted from the computer after the application exits.

I'm doing the second, and there's not much I can do about the game not running on a non-administrator account.
Sorry!

I see, thanks for the explanation!

Does this version of fallout have cinematics and gore? cause every fallout I have downloaded, they have no cinematics and no blood effects. (really gay when you have the bloody mess perk on)

I think that there is a bug in the Mutant base, every time I try to enter 1st level once left it program crashes. Is there any way to solve it by changing the falloutw.exe for an older version?

downloaded the fallout 1.3.3 and the fallout portable launcher but dont have a clue on how to start the game some help would be nice

Anonymous said...

Forget it I figured it out.

I'm new so be nice!

When I try to play this, or any of your other games off my flash drive I get a splash screen from the game which goes neon colors on me. Then my monitor resolution gets changed, and then the game minimizes itself and my resolution goes back to normal. I've noticed that as long as I leave the game minimized it's taking up 90%+ of my CPU.

All I did was extract the files and run the Portable***.exe file. Did I miss something?

That's a very weird reaction, Dave! What is your OS? Have you tried with a different computer? Do you have the latest DirectX installed? Have you ever encountered anything like this before?

Anonymous said...

Well I was using an HP laptop at work running XP. So of course as soon as I got home I tried it on my personal computer and it works just fine. So... when I get back to work in the morning I'll check for a Direct X update.

I see you've mentioned admin accounts on other parts of the site. I definitely am not logged in as admin.

Damn work for trying to force me to be productive!

Thanks!

Update: Got back to work and suddenly the games work just fine! Did some testing with various apps we use and apparently one of them interferes with the games. If it's running when I try to start a game it has the effect I mentioned before. Easy fix, thanks!

Thanks for the update!

my pc crashes after i exit teh game. i downloaded fallout2 from your links and the game works fine.

i just have a problem with fallout1

Milo said...

I don't know what to tell you!
The fact that it runs at all suggests that the problem does not lie with my launcher. It's hard to say what the problem is! Try exiting all programs before launching the game, possibly?

Though it would probably be huge, I'd like to suggest The Fall - Last Days of Gaia for the hitlist. Its company is pretty much in pieces and probably wouldn't care about you doing it. It's a post apocalyptic game like Fallout.

Though its a German game, an English mod can be installed to change the text to English (not the voices, though) making it understandable.

Regardless, this portable Fallout is a fantastic idea. You rock, man! I am very grateful.

yeah there is a problem with fallout 1 every time you try and leave level 3 of the military base whether its the lift to level 2 or 1 the game crashes .. this really sux as its the last part of the game and i cant finish it lol :(

Anonymous said...

Yeah i have found the same bug. any suggestions Milo ?

Anonymous said...

OK so if you do the military base before destroying the master in the cathedral it will not crash .. i found this out by reloading an old save and doing the last two objectives in reverse order. but when you complete the game there is speech missing from certain endings explaining to you how your actions have affected the different settlements of the wasteland apart from a few bugs this is a quality release :D

Anonymous said...

hey, first of all thanks for all releases. I've started playing fallout with a melee character and the program seems to crash whenever I try to holster my knife (i.e. by pressing the switch weapon button or by interacting with environment like opening boxes when the character is supposed to holster the weapon).

Thanks for putting this game together!

One question, though: Is there really no way to get around the fact that I'm not an administrator on my XP machine? (the game won't run because it tries to write to the registry) Perhaps you could have the game write to a separate registry file? (I'm not sure that this is possible, just wondering).

Anyway, thanks again for your work.

I can't get this game to work on my laptop. When I try and run the launcher, I just get a splash screen and then it goes back to windows.

I have the latest version of DirectX. I run XP Home version 2002 with SP3. I'm Admin on my laptop.

Is there anything I am missing ?

This is excellent. Now I can take my crazy rampages across the Wasteland with me anywhere... You sir, deserve a medal.

Thank you :D

I'm new to this stuff, so no flaming please.

I've been trying to download it from mininova, and the availability has been stuck at %60.3 for HOURS. I downloaded the Portable Fallout 2 from mininova before, but it did it a LOT quicker, so what's up? Could anyone help me out?

Constant crashing @ Military base, a well documented bug when running on windows XP. This section of the game cannot be avoided and therefore the game cannot be completed.
